Our Proud History
Since its inception, TGGF has directly touched more than 50,000 veterans through a multitude of battlefield programs, organized trips to national and international destinations, and other activities. Founded in 2004, TGGF is the only non-profit organization devoted to helping veterans return to their battlefields, enabling closure of their war experiences, while at the same time, educating youth about key war events and their relevance.
The idea for TGGF was conceived after founder Timothy Davis (an Australian native) made the journey to Normandy to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of D-Day in June of 2004. During the week-long event, Timothy met and spoke with many of the veterans in attendance. Over and over again, they talked about the importance of “closure.”
Although the crowd at that commemoration numbered more than 70,000, fewer than 450 World War II veterans had made the journey back to France for this historic event. Ironically, it was during this same event that the governments of both the United States and the United Kingdom announced this would be the last major government-funded commemoration event in Normandy. For Timothy, it raised the question of how many veterans might have attended the event, had they been given the opportunity.
Upon returning home, Timothy contacted local veterans groups and organizations and determined that veterans would benefit greatly from the opportunity to return to a foreign battlefield. Perhaps they would even find some closure. Most would need financial assistance to make these journeys, as well as trip organization and guiding. The Greatest Generations Foundation was born. Since then, TGGF has participated in every major commemoration event of World War II.
